As this process begins I've realized that I have many advantages over the typical food stamp recipient. I have experience and some level of competence bargain shopping and making inexpensive meals. I have access to a computer, sale flyers, and transportation to the store of my choice. Additionally, we have grocery stores to purchase our food rather than the convenience stores that many urban residents have.
Today breakfast was 2 scrambled eggs and 2 pieces of toast with margarine and grape jelly each. I put a little cheese in the eggs and John topped his with picante. For lunch we had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, carrot sticks and celery. Dinner was grilled chicken (with a dry rub), rice, frozen veggies and green salad and coleslaw.
My 18 year old daughter is not participating in the challenge so we've planned on her eating something else for dinner this week. After lunch today she asked if her boyfriend could come to dinner and my first thought was "what are they going to eat?" After mulling it over I decided they could have the 2 extra chicken breasts and I would make an extra salad for them.
Our total cost for food for the day without the chicken and extra salad that our guests consumed was about $8.62 (including spices).
